Canadian Ecovillage Conference

The Ecovillage Network of Canada will host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) June 24-26 at La Cité Écologique, a 26-year-old ecovillage in Ham du Nord, Québec. Goals for the conference include networking among participants, sharing information about the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) and Ecovillage Network of Canada (ENC), and learning more about the host community, La Cité Écologique. Keynote speaker Albert Bates will give two presentations: “Ecovillages as a Counterpoint to Urban Society” and “The Biochar Solution.”

One of the organizers of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) in the early 1990s, Albert Bates served as GEN’s board chair (2002-2003) and president (2003-2004), and, as principal organizer of Ecovillage Network of the Americas (ENA), served as ENA president from 1996 to 2003. He founded Ecovillage Training Center (ETC) at The Farm in 1994, and there, and at other venues internationally has taught sustainable design, natural building, permaculture, and technologies of the future. His books include Climate in Crisis (1990),
The Post-petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook (New Society Publishers, 2006), and The Biochar Solution (New Society Publishers, 2010). He has been a member of The Farm community in Tennessee since 1972; director of the Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology since 1984, and director of Ecovillage Training Center at The Farm since 1994. He shared in the first Right Livelihood Award (also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize) in 1980 as part of the executive board of the Farm-based NGO Plenty International.

Other conference activities will include a welcome by Lee Davis, president of Ecovillage Network of Canada; a tour of La Cité; a description of its spiritual mission, governance, community-owned businesses, and legal/financial arrangements; introductions and presentations of each participating ecovillage or community; workshops offered by La Cité on organic agriculture, sustainable development, sustainable energy, organic health care, and holistic education for community children; and a presentation by La Cité founder Michael Deunov Cornellier about the development and evolution of the community; and a with he and La Cité attorney Marie-Josee Duval on the legal and financial challenges facing ecovillages in Canada.

The Annual General Meeting portion of the conference will include a review ENC’s obligations as a nonprofit organization, a financial report, annual elections and appointment of members to the ECN board, and discussion of how ecovillages and intentional communities can better interact and help each other and share their experience and services.
